A REAL ID is a driver license or ID card that meets federal security standards. Florida has issued compliant credentials since 2010, and they carry a star in the upper right corner. Since May 7, 2025, travelers boarding domestic commercial flights need a REAL ID or another accepted form of ID, such as a passport.
Do you need one?
- You need a REAL ID (or a passport or other federally accepted ID) to board a domestic flight and to enter certain federal facilities.
- You do not need one just to drive, vote, or buy age-restricted items.
- Check your card for the star. If it has no star, it is not compliant.
Documents to bring
- One primary proof of identity: for example a valid U.S. passport, certified birth certificate or naturalization certificate.
- Proof of your Social Security number: Social Security card, W-2 or similar.
- Two proofs of your principal residence in Florida: such as a lease, mortgage statement, utility bill or bank statement showing your name and address.
- Name-change documents if your current name differs from your identity document (marriage certificate, court order).
How to get one
- Gather your original documents (copies are usually not accepted).
- Make an appointment at a driver license service center or tax collector office if one is available. Appointments are recommended.
- Visit in person. If your license is not yet REAL ID compliant, you cannot renew online; you must apply in person.
- Pay the license or ID fee. See renewal cycles and fees.
