Florida Driver License and ID Renewal: Cycles and Online Services
How often to renew, how early you can start, what you can do online, and when you must go in person.
Rules and fees change. Spiral Search is an independent directory and is not a government agency. Confirm current requirements with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) or your county tax collector before you go.
The basics
- Florida licenses and ID cards are generally renewed every 8 years.
- You can renew a driver license up to 18 months early. ID cards and commercial licenses: up to 12 months early.
- The standard fee for a Class E license renewal is $48; an ID card is $25. A replacement license is $25. A tax collector service fee of about $6.25 may apply.
Renewing online (MyDMV Portal)
Online renewal is available for many people, but it is not available if:
- Your last renewal was already done online (the next one must be in person).
- Your license is not REAL ID compliant.
- You need a new photo.
When you must go in person
- First-time Florida license, CDL or ID.
- Name changes, or adding or removing designations.
- Court-ordered updates and temporary documents.
- Replacing a stolen license or ID (bring the police report; the replacement is free).
- Any renewal that does not meet the online rules above.
Vision requirements
The minimum vision standard is 20/70. Drivers over 80 must submit a vision examination form completed by a physician or be tested at the office. See how to prepare for vision and medical screenings.
What is REAL ID?
A REAL ID-compliant license or card (marked with a star) meets federal standards for boarding domestic flights and entering certain federal facilities. Getting one requires an in-person visit with additional documents. See what to bring.
Tips
- Check your expiry date and put a reminder on your phone.
- Start the process 1 to 2 months before expiry.
- Update your address online first if it has changed.
- Find your nearest driver license office on Spiral Search and ask about appointments.
