How to Renew Your Florida Vehicle Registration
Ways to renew, what you need, and what happens if you renew late.
Rules and fees change. Spiral Search is an independent directory and is not a government agency. Confirm current requirements with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) or your county tax collector before you go.
Renew before the expiration date
You must renew on or before the expiration date shown on your registration. County tax collectors mail courtesy renewal notices at least three weeks before expiry, but not receiving a notice does not excuse you. Driving with an expired registration is illegal in Florida.
What you need
- Your renewal notice, plate number or VIN.
- Proof of current Florida auto insurance: company name, policy number and the vehicle insured. (Motorcycles are exempt from this requirement.)
- Payment. See our fee calculator.
Ways to renew
| Method | Notes |
|---|---|
| Online | Through the state's renewal portal. Choose mail delivery or same-day pickup at a service center. Not available for commercial trucks over 26,001 lbs. |
| By mail | Return the renewal notice with payment to your county tax collector. |
| Kiosk | Self-service kiosks, automobiles only. |
| In person | At the tax collector, or an authorized tag agency. |
Late renewal
If you do not renew by the 11th day after expiration, penalty fees are added. Late fees and the cost of a citation add up quickly, so set a phone reminder a month before your expiry.
