How to Get a Duplicate (Replacement) Florida Vehicle Title
When you can apply for a duplicate title, the form, the fees and what to do if there is a lien.
Rules and fees change. Spiral Search is an independent directory and is not a government agency. Confirm current requirements with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) or your county tax collector before you go.
Who can apply
- The owner on record can apply for a duplicate if the original title is lost, stolen or destroyed.
- If there is an outstanding lien (a car loan), only the lienholder can apply for a duplicate.
- If someone else applies on your behalf, they need a power of attorney (form HSMV 82053) or a notarized affidavit from the owner.
What you need
- Form HSMV 82101 (Application for Duplicate or Lost-in-Transit Title).
- A valid photo ID.
- Payment of the fee.
Fees
| Item | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Duplicate title (electronic) | About $75 (county pages show $75.25 to $75.75) |
| Printed paper copy | $2.50 extra |
| Fast title (same day at many offices) | $10 extra for vehicles |
| Title lost in the mail | No fee if you apply within 180 days of issue |
Many titles in Florida are electronic and exist only in the state database. If you have a lien, the lienholder holds the title electronically and you receive a printed one after the loan is paid.
Steps
- Confirm whether the title is electronic or printed and whether a lien exists.
- Complete form HSMV 82101.
- Take it with your photo ID to a tax collector office.
- Pay the fee and choose whether you want a printed copy.
